Native of China and Japan. A small evergreen shrub with a rounded, compact habit. Foliage is light green tinged with purple-red in spring and summer, turning to a dark purple-red in winter. Leaves are cupped, alternate, tri-pinnately compound, elliptic-lanceolate, 1 1/2" to 2 1/2" long, 3/4" to 1 1/4" wide. Not known to flower or fruit. Prefers moist, fertile soil and can take full shade. Slow growth rate.
